3-D Imaging - A Technological Breakthrough in Diagnosis and Treatment

	The Periodontal and Dental Implant Institute is pleased to announce that we utilize the state of the art ‘i-CAT Cone Beam 3-D Dental Imaging System. This advanced 3-D technology (i-CAT) provides high-definition, three-dimensional, digital imaging at a reduced cost and with significantly less radiation than traditional medical CT scans.

3-Dimensional Imaging

The ‘i-CAT’s’ 3-D imaging system provides a complete view of the upper and lower jaw bones, giving the most thorough diagnostic information possible. That allows Dr. Forrest to more accurately diagnose, and treat patients more predictably than with conventional 2 dimensional imaging.  Every aspect of the facial skeleton can be evaluated with distortion-free images reconstructed from true data gathered by an advanced digital sensor.  Measurements are all one-to-one, with no magnification error.

Standard of Care

The standard of care has changed.  Patients are more informed and demand a higher level of care. Dr. Forrest can now determine precise tooth position and the proximity of other vital structures such as adjacent teeth, nerves, the sinus, and to the nasal passage.

The ‘i-CAT’ provides us the best information available with which to treatment plan the placement of dental implants.  Widely accepted as the ultimate diagnostic study for implant treatment planning, we now have the ability in our office to study the maxilla (the upper jaw bone) and mandible (the lower jaw bone), demonstrate the conditions to you, and obtain predictable results.

Vital structures and bone morphology at desired implant sites are identified and measured with absolute distortion free data that is reconstructed in three dimensions. With this technology that we utilize at The Periodontal and Dental Implant Institute, implant planning is optimized because we are able to visualize the opposing dentition while examining the proposed implant site. What is a CBCT Dental Scan?
CBCT Dental Scans use advanced computer programs to analyze an X-ray study. By providing detailed three-dimensional images, a ‘CBCT Dental Scan’ (i-CAT) enables Dr. Forrest to select the best location for your implants and plan the details of your surgery with pinpoint accuracy, well before the operation.

How does a CBCT Dental Scan differ from conventional X-rays?
Routine dental X-rays are two-dimensional.  They only show the location of your teeth and the height of the bone. These X-rays are often distorted, and they cannot depict the thickness of your jawbone.

A ‘CBCT Dental Scan’, on the other hand, is distortion free. It illustrates the actual make-up of the bone and provides three-dimensional and cross-sectional views of your jaws. The life-size images allow us to accurately measure the amount of bone that is available for implants.

Why do I need such a specialized X-ray?
An ‘i-CAT’ CBCT Dental Scan’ helps Dr. Forrest determine if you are a good candidate for implant surgery or one of our other services. This can save you an unnecessary operation because the study tells us a lot more than conventional x-rays, and it helps us better prepare for your surgery.  A ‘CBCT Dental Scan’ will show us the exact location of anatomical structures, the contours of the jawbone, and the best sites for your implants before surgery.

This means that there are virtually no surprises when we perform your surgery. That means less operating time and fewer complications for you.

Typically, Invisalign® cases take about a year from start to finish.  You will see Dr. Forrest every 6- 8 weeks to review your progress.  You will receive additional aligners every few visits.  Treatment time and the number of aligners you receive will vary from patient to patient.

How do I begin?

1. Make an appointment with Dr. Forrest.  During your visit you can decide on your course of treatment.  Impressions of your bite and photos of your mouth will be made and sent to Invisalign® for processing.
2. You will see a 3-D computer animation of your projected result before treatment begins.
3. Your aligners will be made using advanced 3-D computer imaging.  Your bite impressions are used to construct a custom-made series of clear and removable aligners.
4. You will receive your aligners.
5. You will wear your aligners day and night, according to Dr. Forrest’s instructions.  They will only be removed to eat, drink, brush, and floss.

Does Invisalign® work?

Yes.  For certain types of orthodontic problems, Invisalign® has been shown to be effective in straightening teeth.  Invisalign® can eliminate crowding or large spaces between your teeth.  Even some complex cases can be treated.
